Pierre Balmain (Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, 18 maggio 1914 – Parigi, 29 giugno 1982) was born into the world of fashion. His father was the owner of a drapery business, and his mother owned a boutique. Thanks to his involvement with his mother’s shop, where he regularly designed dresses, Balmain was destined to become one of the most famous stylists in the world, renowned for showcasing long bell shaped skirts and small cinched in waists. Balmain was often called upon to design elegant costumes for films. Indeed, he dressed Sophia Loren in The Millionaires, as well as Brigitte Bardot in And God Created Woman. Today his creations are still hugely popular with the fashion elite, with stars such as Penelope Cruz donning one of his acclaimed dresses on the red carpet in 2009.
