A finely detailed pair of antique gesso medallions—also readable as portrait plaques or oval relief portraits—depicting Saints Peter and Paul, expertly patinated to evoke the rich, warm tones of aged bronze. Though modest in scale, each oval silhouette reveals exceptional high-relief craftsmanship, capturing with precision the expressive features, full beards, and deeply carved drapery of the saints’ garments.

These sculptural portrait roundels are housed within elegant rectangular giltwood frames, finely carved and centred by an oval opening. A secondary gilded oval surround frames each plaque, creating a refined layered, dimensional effect that enhances depth and presence. The composition is further elevated by a soft rose silk ground, delicately patterned with floral and foliate motifs, adding luminosity and drawing the eye to the relief work.
Designed to face one another, the two portrait medallions form a harmonious and highly decorative wall ensemble—ideal as antique wall décor, statement plaques, or classical decorative panels in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Stylistically, the design reflects the enduring influence of Neoclassical portraiture, combined with a sculptural richness reminiscent of Baroque relief carving. The treatment of hair and drapery, together with the oval portrait format, recalls early 19th-century medallion profiles and carved likenesses.

Objects of this kind—variously described as relief portraits, devotional plaques, or classical silhouettes—were especially sought after as refined souvenirs during and after the Grand Tour, when travellers collected representations of religious and classical heritage. Produced in the early 20th century, these pieces embody that continued fascination with antiquity, offering both historical resonance and strong decorative presence.
An ideal choice for collectors of religious art, antique portrait plaques, classical reliefs, or for interior designers seeking layered, heritage-rich wall decoration.
