This wonderful 19th century French black and gold lacquered wood jewel box is fully decorated all-over and inside with elaborates chinese's every day life scenes with figures and butterflies in a bucolic landscape, the oriental style chinoiserie floral and natural patterns are enriched by gilt and red lacquer accents both on sides and on top.

This coffer rests on round hand carved black lacquer wood feet. This lovely octagonal black lacquer wood case of narrow proportion is very large and spacious inside, fitted with a glove compartment and a frontal drawer with various smaller rectangular compartments. A little decorated plaque hides a secret compartment. Original bronze handle and hardware. Good condition, wear consistent with age and use.
